Missy’s Law and Garages

I realize that most of Missy’s Law is Missy’s fault. Not thinking things through or getting ahead of myself. Whatever. Today’s incident was no different.

I am blessed to have a friend that selflessly offered to allow me to store most of my copious things at her home. In the process of selling nearly everything I have, I make frequent trips to her home. She made me a key. I usually go in the back way because I don’t want her to take the chain off the front door. And with the key, I can access what I need from the back entrance. This is what I did today.

I sold a nice Kate Spade purse and needed to pick it up.

There is one door that requires the key that allows access to the garage. Then there is another door from the garage that leads into the house. Both have deadbolts and knob locks. So I get in, do some of my things (dropping off stuff), then head to the garage to gather what I need. I do. I then turn to go back in the house only to find myself locked in the garage.

I can open the garage door and access the back yard and even go out to my locked car (keys are inside the house). I cant call her because my phone is also inside of the house. I could go to a neighbor’s house and call her. However, technology has advanced to the point that I don’t actually need to know phone numbers to call when I have my phone. Basically, I don’t know her number. So I decide I’ll wait for her to come home.

I changed my mind after two hours and a very cold garage floor. So I broke in to my friend’s house. My dear, sweet, always there for me friend, now has to repair something I broke so that I could leave. I called her immediately. She laughed. She too has had to break in from time to time.

It’s a good thing I didn’t wait too. She and her son had just settled in to visit with her parents for hours. Who knows how long I would’ve been in that garage?

So there’s my short story about Missy’s Law and the Garage.

Check the locks before you close the door behind you.
