The Death Of The Honda

You may know that my sweet little Honda is no longer with us. He got totaled Monday, February 9th.

I was driving home from Utah. I hit some ice and then a good number of guard rails and *poof* my car is totaled. The back window shattered and glass was everywhere. Thus I had a few cuts but other than that no injury. I was quite lucky. Alas, the Honda was not. The photos here are from the night of the accident.

It was 9 pm and really cold out (enough to freeze the roads) and I was in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming. Between phone calls to the insurance agency, the highway patrol, and my friend, the tow truck driver finally arrived. He said he saw where my accident had happened because of the downed guard rails. So I quickly replied, “Oh you’ve seen my work?”

He was really nice and he dropped me off at a local motel. He went in to make sure I checked in ok and then helped me get my bag out of the Honda that was sitting on the flatbed of his tow truck. So in I went to my room. It was a nice room. I showered to get the glass out of my hair before I went to bed.

I should note here that my friend, Ruben, stayed on the phone with me during most of this and insisted that I let him know as soon as I was safe. I love him for that. I needed a friend because I was pretty shaken up by the whole experience. I probably don’t need to remind anyone that I don’t have good luck with accidents.

When I woke up, I began with the phone calls. That went on most of the morning and then I realized I’d missed the free continental breakfast and I was hungry. Well, I called my friend and with his amazing little phone he determined that there was a gas station not too far from me. So I put on my warm clothes and headed out. I saw a fast food restaurant on the way and stopped there for some food.

At any rate, the car was determined to be totaled as the cost to fix it would be 11K while its worth was technically only 7K. I say technically because I had no way to get home now. Luckily, my friend came to pick me up, help me get my personal belongings out of the Honda as I said my silent good byes to what had become like a member of the family, and then my friend took me back to Salt Lake City to let me stay a few more days.

I must thank him because I wasn’t a real treat to deal with during these days. I was between insurance phone calls and trying to figure out how/when to get home. Finally a flight was decided on. I opted to wait until Friday since he doesn’t work on Fridays and like the doll he is, he had already missed a day of work to come get me from Wyoming.

SO you may be asking what makes this Missy’s Law vs. Just Something that Sucks. Well, here it is.

I was driving and believed the roads looked like they were getting pretty bad. So I pulled off the highway to get a room for the night. I went to this one little inn that seemed safe enough. I went in to the office where it had a little sign that says “Ring Bell for Service.” So I rang the bell.

No one came. I stood there for a good 15 minutes before I decided to just head down to the next exit to find another place to stop. However before the next exit, I hit ice and then a good number of guard rails…
