Harper

Last Wednesday was one year since the fluffy part of my heart died. The silence is deafening. I miss him so much!

He called me lady.

What’s up, lady? He called me lady.

For the last few months I’ve been distracting myself by helping my mom look for a dog. I’ve been on the internet interacting with different rescue groups, filling out applications, taking mom to adoption events, etc. I’ve been reading bios of different dogs and some fill me with joy and others bring me to tears. I’ve seen a handful that look like my Barkley and that brings me to tears as well.

In my experiences with rescues, I’ve come to a conclusion. They’re in a particularly difficult position. They want to weed out people who aren’t good for the dogs, so they make the adoption process rigorous. However, by making the process too difficult, they eliminate good people. Or the pups are already adopted but their profiles haven’t been removed from the websites. Or, my FAVORITE is when they flat out don’t respond.

It’s sad because I inquired about this one dog, Willow. And there was no response. So, I followed up. The rescue asked about mom & her situation (living arrangements, etc.) and said they’d send an application if they thought it was a good match. So, I sent the info. Nothing. So, I followed up again and asked, “So it’s not a good fit?” They responded that they’d determined that having a younger dog could cause falls because of mom’s mobility issues. That response was on 9/3/18. As of today (9/30/18), Willow is still up for adoption. She could have been out of a cage and in her own bed.

And for the record, only one thing causes my mom to fall. Gravity.

Anyway, this past Tuesday, I picked up mom’s new companion. She adopted a little guy from a shelter, so we know hardly anything about him other than he’s pretty darn cute.

She named him after her favorite author.

Meet little Harper.

He was so worn out after his first day with mom, he passed out in a bundle of blankets.
