When my mom moved in with us, we brought her piano here. It is the same piano that sat in our house for forty years or so. The first time my finger touched the keys, it was those keys. It’s the piano that I learned on and failed to practice on.
This is the piano that my mom would play on. She loves music. And she was a very talented pianist. Growing up she would play at church. And playing church music soothed her unquiet mind. My mom suffered from depression all of her life. She would find peace in the church and comfort in the music.
When mom went into the assisted living facility, I recognized that we have 2 pianos in the house that no one plays. There was talk of selling one or keeping both. As our plans to move out to the ranch start to solidify, keeping both didn’t seem like a viable option.
The thought of selling it didn’t sit well with me.
I want more for this piano. I want it to bring smiles. I want it to bring the peace and comfort that it brought to my mom.
So I decided to donate it. I contacted Denton State Supported Living Center to see if they would like it. After a little time, the board approved the donation and they’ll be picking it up soon.
I told mom and she is touched. She is happy about being able to give the gift of music to a population who is too frequently overlooked.
And that brings me peace and comfort.
